There’s something about summer that just feels right. Maybe it’s the golden light spilling through the trees, the barefoot giggles of kids running through the grass, or the way time seems to slow down just enough to soak it all in. For me, summer sessions have a certain kind of joy that’s hard to replicate in any other season. Families feel more relaxed, the scenery is stunning and lighting is bright, yet soft.  

If you’ve been thinking about booking family photos, summer is the perfect time. Whether you're dreaming of wildflower fields, sandy toes at the beach, or a cozy sunset session close to home, Halton is full of incredible backdrops. There are so many reasons why I love photographing families in summer, so here’s a few!  

Summer light is soft and beautiful, especially during golden hour (about an hour before sunset). It wraps everything in a warm glow that flatters every skin tone and adds that dreamy, sun-kissed touch to your photos. Since the days are longer, there’s more flexibility when it comes to timing which is super helpful when working around dinner, naps, or bedtime. If you’ve got little ones, I always help find that perfect window where the light is beautiful and the kids are still in good spirits. Now, I get it - summer golden hour can be tricky with early bedtimes. But as we move into August, that timing becomes more manageable for younger kids. Either way, I’ll work with your family’s unique routine to ensure the session feels easy and successful.  

In Southern Ontario, nature shows off in the summer. From lush green trails to blooming gardens, wildflower meadows to golden wheat fields there really is no shortage of incredible settings. I’ll suggest a location from my list of favourites, or if you have a spot that’s special to your family, I’m all ears. No matter the place, I’ll scout it in advance to find the best photo ops for the time of day we’ll be shooting. 

Whether you're craving photos on the beach, in the lavender fields, or amongst the trees, there’s something for every family. Each spot in my location guide brings something unique, and we’ll choose the one that fits your vibe best. Along with my location guide, I’ll send you a style guide and be available to help with any prep leading up to the session. We want you to look like yourselves, just a slightly more polished version. Think earth tones, soft patterns, and light, airy textures.

There is also something to be said about summer that brings out everyone’s playful side. The kids are out of school, parents are in vacation mode, and there's just a general sense of ease that you don’t always get during busier seasons. This relaxed energy comes through in your photos. The cuddles are looser, the laughter is louder, and the whole session feels more like a memory being made rather than a box to check off. It’s honestly one of the best times to capture your family just being… your family. 

Here are a few things to keep in mind before your session: 

• Book during golden hour if possible, I promise it’s worth staying up a little later for that light. 
• Bug spray is a must if we’re heading into fields or wooded areas. I always bring it with me, but I also understand different families prefer different kinds!  
• Snacks help, like a lot. Bring something easy for the kids to munch on while being (or not being) mindful of the mess. 
• Make it an experience and plan a little ice cream stop after or a family session. It makes the session feel like a special outing, not a chore. Trust me, ice cream works extremely well ...
