What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot in the GTA: Tips from a Halton Hills Photographer
As a family photographer in the GTA and Halton Hills, I often get asked what to wear to a photo session. When choosing the right outfits to wear to your photo session for you and your family most photographers will tell you to stick to light, neutral, or earth tones. Now I know you're probably thinking that we advise to wear these colours to help with our editing style or to enhance our portfolio ... although both of those things tend to be true when it comes to neutrals the real reason is due to colour casting.
What is colour casting?
Have you ever taken a photo of your family in the grass on a bright and sunny day in the middle of summer and wondered why your family appeared slightly green? What about those Christmas photos that you had taken in matching buffalo plaid where your daughter's face is tinged red? That my friend, is colour casting. The light of our environment reflects off of our clothing choices which affects the way that your photos turn out.
Family photographers are not suggesting you wear neutral colours to be boring or to fit a certain aesthetic of their portfolio. We are suggesting these things because it will directly affect your gallery and we want you to receive a gallery that is beautiful, and as true to your family as possible.
So no, I'm not saying never wear your favourite buffalo plaid. However, I am saying that as long as you understand colour casting, you can make a more informed decision about your outfits or speak to your photographer about your potential outfits ahead of time to help manage expectations regarding your gallery. At the end of the day, the best outfits for family photos are the ones that reflect your personality.
